CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Sora
AGE: 15-ish
CANON: Kingdom Hearts

CANON HISTORY: a wiki link!
CANON PERSONALITY:

Sora, at first glance, is a very typical shonen protagonist. He's brave and heroic, and willing to risk his life for the sake of others, but also very kind and loving, and can make friends with everyone he meets, be they friend or foe.

This is deceiving. While all of those things are true of him, there is so much more to Sora than just tropes and cliques, and indeed, those 'standard protagonist characteristics' have a tendency to either become plot points, or come back and bite him later. For example, his extreme ability to make friends becomes a key point in the series, connecting everything together and explaining why everything in the series seems to revolve around him (despite him being described as dull and weak by the antagonist).

One of Sora's most defining characteristics is his extreme kindness and empathy towards others. He's loyal to a fault, and willing to forgive just about anything so long as the other party seems truly sorry. He makes friends easily, and always sees the good in someone before he recognizes the bad, and will sometimes stop whatever he's doing to help a friend in need. In the past, this has been taken advantage of, but still Sora continues to persist with this positive attitude.

His positivity is also a large part of his personality. Even when the odds are against him and his allies are down for the count, Sora keeps his head up. It takes a very extreme circumstance for him to let life get him down, such as when he was (temporarily) abandoned by his friends during the first game. He's nearly a personification of a guy who makes lemonaid when life gives him lemons (and he's been given quite a few lemons).

However, he is far from being sunshine and rainbows 100% of the time. While he does have a remarkable capacity to let things roll off his back, there have been times where his anger gets the best of him, especially if he's confused or overwhelmed. He has been selfish in the past, as well as frustrated and impatient when something is going too slow for his liking. He also has a liking for competitions, and being flashy to impress his friends. Some of this can be chalked up to his youth, as some of these traits have begun to fade with his age.

Sora is also not exactly the brightest crayon in the tool shed. While not stupid by any means, he can have a degree of gullibility and obliviousness to him that makes him the last to notice a situation. This, coupled with his open heart and deep need to help people, have put him into tight spots more than once. He's also proven to have no skill with technology or computers, and has broken them by accident in the past. He is, however, very perceptive of other peoples emotions, and very good at talking to people and smoothing over rough situations. He's also an independent thinker, and will always trust his own judgement about whether a situation is right or wrong.

Another thing Sora is is brash, a bit single-minded, and very much the sort to leap first and ask questions later. When he gets his mind set on doing something, he'll sometimes get tunnel vision toward that goal, as evidenced by his desire to find his friends in both the first and second games, and very especially in Chain of Memories. Upon meeting authority figures, he'll sometimes forget himself and be much more casual with them than he should be.

His biggest flaw, however, comes at the cost of one of his strengths. His ability to smile through everything, to put others first, to brighten the room and cheer his friends up, can take a toll on him. Though Sora is very much an open book with his emotions, the situation can sometimes cause his cheerfulness to backfire on him, and occasionally even break down (as is the case at the end of Dream Drop Distance).

While Sora does have his flaws, overall, he's shows so much more good than he does bad. He's confident, and has a strong sense of justice, but can still take the time to help his friends, and genuinely cares about each and every one of them. His heart is always in the right place, and he's reliable, brave, and sweet. Over the course of the series, Sora has grown from a child into a young man, but his base personality has remained the same, refusing to be beaten down by the challenges life has given him.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Keyblade

A mysterious blade that can open, quite literally, ANY lock, from a dollhouse to a bank vault to a plain wooden door, as well as lock and unlock peoples hearts and the hearts of the many worlds Sora has visited. It can be summoned to the wielder's hand at will, and dismissed back into their heart as well. It requires very little upkeep, as its magic keeps it from wearing down or tarnishing, and has never been shown to lose its edge. A keyblade can take on many forms through the use of keychains clipped onto the base, which change its appearance and abilities, though it will always remain in its original form should a keychain not be equipped. Generally, every wielder's personal keyblade has a base form that is unique to them, though there are exceptions.

One must have an incredibly strong heart in order to wield a keyblade, as a keyblade is an extension of ones heart. The power to wield a keyblade is passed on from wielder to wielder through the use of a special ceremony, and can only be used by someone who has received this right. Sora is an anomaly in this regard, as he has never undergone this ceremony, and his keyblade came to him of its own accord, drawn in by the strength of his heart.

Swordplay/Combat Skills

Due to his childhood of play-fighting on his home island, Sora is quite well versed in basic combat even before he begins his journey, which has only honed and refined his skills to put him on a master level. His fighting style is to hold his weapon two-handed and attack with full-powered swings, much like a club. While he is relatively powerful, his true strength lies in the speed of his attacks, pulling off combos of several hits before his opponent can attack back.

Movement

Sora has access to several ways to get around, with the most basic being his Dodge Roll, which is a defensive maneuver that allows Sora to roll out of the way of incoming attacks. He's able to use this to swiftly move himself around enemies, springing out of the roll to attack from a different angle.

He also is able to perform various jumping and flying moves, more useful for getting around than straight combat. He begins the series with a standard jump, but soon after gains a High Jump, which easily doubles his original jump, and later, Glide and Superglide. Glide allows Sora to ride the air currents around him, letting him 'fly' for a short period of time, and Superglide doubles the speed of this.

Keeping in the spirit of speed, Sora also has Quick Run, which allows him to dash forward a short distance, as well as Aerial Recovery, which allows Sora to recover quickly after being knocked into the air.

Heart

Sora's heart is known in canon to be particularly strong, being one of only two people to be able to retain their form after becoming a monster known as a heartless. He has also welcomed the lost hearts of others into his own, providing them refuge when they had nowhere else to go and allowing them to sleep in the safety of his heart. At present count, there are between three to five people currently sleeping in Sora's heart, depending on who you ask.

Special Abilities

Sora's literal hundreds of combat abilities can be broken down into just a few different categories;

- Attack Attack abilities go above and beyond Sora's regular keyblade bash attack, allowing him a greater range of what he's able to do during a fight. He tends to favor quick, powerful hits that allow him the maximum range of movement. For example, Sliding Dash allows him to instantly close in on and attack a far-off target, Strike Raid allows him to throw the keyblade like a boomerang and attack enemies from afar, and Sonic Blade allows him to rush an enemy multiple times. A full list of attack commands can be found here.

- Magic Sora is skilled at a variety of magics, but tends to prefer basic, light based spells such as Fire, Blizzard, and Thunder. He has also been known to use more powerful spells, such as Holy and Spark, as well as healing abilities like Cure and Esuna. He's also been known on occasion to use status-inducing spells, though these are less common. A full list of magic commands can be found here.

- Defense In addition to dodging, Sora is also able to block enemy attack with the use of several different varieties of the move Block, varying from a basic knockback block to Sliding Block, which knocks the attacker into the air. In addition, he also has 'payback' moves, which take his block and turn it into a retaliating attack. A list of defense commands can be found here.

- Flowmotion An odd cross between regular dodging moves and a form of parkour, Flowmotion allows the user a short burst of movement to fly between walls, across gaps, and down railings. It allows the user to traverse their surroundings quickly and efficiently, and can allow for more powerful attacks and better dodging abilities. A more in-depth explanation of Flowmotion can be found here.

Other

- Skateboarding Sora has been shown to be a relatively skilled skateboarder, though he lacks any formal training and mainly uses it as a means of transportation. He can do many basic tricks (such as kickflips and rail grinding) with ease, and can even fight to a certain extent while riding.

- Singing While its unlikely he'll ever be famous for it, Sora has participated in several musicals with his vocals, and is often paired with Ariel for songs.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Sora Pu'uwai
AU AGE: 17
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Mostly the same, though his hair is less 'anime spikey' and more 'naturally sticks up'.

AU HISTORY:
  • Sora Pu'uwai, much like the original Sora, was born on an island, far away from any cities. He and his twin brother were born to a Japanese mother and a Hawaiian father, with lots of family on both sides and lots of love from all around.
  • He had a relatively normal childhood, growing up playing with other children and having the sort of freedom one is allowed when you grow up in a place where everyone knows everyone. While he had a degree of independence from the time he was old enough to row a boat, there was always someone around to keep an eye on him.
  • This changed when he was ten years old. Just after he hit double digits, his father very suddenly became very ill, and died within a month. The shock rocked the family, and the peaceful life Sora had known thus far shattered as his family began to fall apart.
  • As a result, his mother decided they all needed a fresh start, and up and moved herself, Sora, and his brother to Recolle, where she'd managed to find a job as a teacher.
  • Sora's brother didn't stay long, as soon after they moved, he scored an all-inclusive scholarship to a boarding school several hours away, leaving Sora and his mother alone.
  • Sora, for his part, seemed to adjust to the change quite well, all things considering. His mother, busy with her new job and satisfied that Sora seemed to be able to take care of himself, left him to his own devices for the most part.
  • As a kid, new to the city and alone except for a few tentative friends, Sora brought home a menagerie of different animals that he found in the streets, everything from dogs and cats to ducks and rabbits. His mother put her foot down fairly quickly, however, and now only takes in animals until he can find them a more suitable home. He currently only has two pets that are actually his, a fat old cat called MeowWow, and a pitbull-husky mix called Buck.
  • Due to pressure from teachers and friends, Sora joined the soccer team once he hit junior high. He doesn't dislike soccer, but he keeps playing because he's not sure what else to do. Thus, he's been on the soccer team for four years now, and is actually quite good.
  • Now a Junior at Recolle High School, he's currently in the process of applying to Recolle University. He has no idea what he wants to do when he grows up, doesn't have any sort of plan of what sort of major he might like, but applies to keep his mother and teachers happy. His current plan is to go in as a Liberal Arts student and get all of his gen eds out of the way, and hope that in three years he'll have a better idea.
AU PERSONALITY:

Probably the biggest change from Sora's canon personality to his AU one is his cheerfulness. While for the most part his personality is much the same due to similar upbringings, this Sora is much more world-weary and rational. However, you wouldn't know by looking at him, as he keeps up his happy demeanor even in the worst circumstances.

Due to the tragedy of losing his father at a young age, Sora learned to keep his bad feelings bottled up inside. While the rest of his family was in chaos, Sora kept smiling, trying to cheer up the people around him, and was praised for 'keeping his chin up' and 'making the best of a bad situation' and being his mother's sunshine during a dark time. He took the praise to heart, and kept smiling. As a result, now that he's grown, he has trouble expressing negative emotions, keeping it all inside even at risk to his own health. He's still a relatively happy kid, but refuses to portray himself as anything but in front of other people. Even his closest friends and his own brother are only vaguely aware of how horribly his father's death affected him.

He also has a lot of trouble saying no to people, unless it's something extremely far removed from his morals or it's something he physically is unable to do. As a result, he often gets roped into things he doesn't want to do with very little protest, such as when he joined the soccer team. He can stand up for himself, certainly, but he doesn't want to let anyone down, again leading back to his father's death and how his relatives praised him.

Finally, his self-esteem is not as high as it could be under other circumstances. While it's not necessarily low, he feels constantly compared to his twin, whom he considers 'more successful' than himself. He feels that he's drifting through life with no purpose, and he feels like maybe there's something better out there somewhere, which is not an uncommon feeling in many teenagers, especially so close to the end of high school. While overall Sora is very similar to his canon counterpart, he's definitely felt the sting of real life and the problems that go with it.
